Letter from our President
Dear Friends:
Recently, the forces of democracy have opened up many closed arenas; film, publishing, television, music production, education and politics have all been through a revolution. If someone wants to write their autobiography, or shoot a movie they believe will enrich the world, they no longer must bargain with the gatekeepers of multinational corporations that filter “product” through focus groups. With the internet they have the power to create and deliver directly to the public.
Now science will join them in that spirit by serving the people directly.
Gandhi said it best, ‘You must be the change you wish to see in the world.’ But I think we can take it a step further. I have made it our primary mission to pursue a kind of “productive impatience” in everything we do, because life is already plagued with far too many delays and hurdles between us and our dreams. I pledge to ceaselessly pursue the fantastic, and strive to make the incredible ordinary -- I know you are just as eager as we are to get cracking.
For innovation and discovery to thrive, they must be allowed to breathe and grow in any direction they choose. The secrets of nature and science will reveal themselves to us if we are able break free from our preconceptions and embrace what might seem like the impossible.
ZapMeNow is intended to be a sort of Manhattan Project for the rest of us. The way we would want scientific research directed if we were the ones calling the shots. Until now, the average person in the street was forced into the role of consumer. Every now and then a company would announce a new product with much fanfare, and then we would eagerly await the moment we were ‘allowed’ to purchase it. Always being obliged to consume and never produce. Not anymore.
Now you all have that power. We are handing you the keys to the lab and saying “go nuts,” we will research the technologies you want us to pursue. The future is yours for the making -- so make it a good one.
